What's it like to be a Settlements Officer?
Settlements Officers ensure that organisations are compliant with business and regulatory policies in the processing and management of loan settlements. They typically work in real estate or financial services and coordinate the completion of documentation and payment for a property. To do this, Settlements Officers need to communicate with multiple stakeholders, such as buyers, sellers, conveyancers and banks. Settlements Officers can also work in vehicle financing, property leasing and stock markets.
Tasks and duties
- Checking loan documents and certifications.
- Preparing funding to ensure details are accurate to enable successful settlement.
- Ensuring loan documents and instructions issued to lawyers are correct and accurate.
- Authorising, activating and maintaining contracts.
- Meeting team targets for the timely completion of settlements.
- Liaising with internal and external customers to negotiate the resolution of settlement and compliance issues.
- Performing general administrative tasks.
- Following up on any missing documents and information required to settle.

Whilst no formal qualifications are required to become a Settlements Officer, previous banking, settlements or loan processing experience is highly regarded. Some employers may prefer candidates with a relevant VET qualification.
- 1.Consider completing a relevant VET qualification. This could be a Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking (FNS40821) or Certificate IV in Banking Services (FNS42020).
- 2.Alternatively, a university degree such as a Bachelor of Banking and Finance, Bachelor of Business (Finance) or Bachelor of Commerce may open up a broader range of career options. This usually takes three years of full-time study.
- 3.Gain experience in the banking, finance or settlements industries and become familiar with loan software and policies, as well as Microsoft Office.
